How trims work

Trimming a piece of armor

  1. Find a smithing template in the wild, or duplicate one you already have with 7 diamonds and the matching block.
  2. At a smithing table, combine the template, the armor piece, and a trim material: an ingot, a crystal or a gem.
  3. The trim is cosmetic. Nothing changes but the look, and you can re-trim a piece at any time by applying another one.

About this viewer

The preview is built from Minecraft's own textures through a public asset mirror: the base armor layer first, then the pattern overlay recoloured through the material's palette, the way the game does it. Switch to Mix per piece to give every piece its own armor, pattern and material. Updated for Minecraft 26.2.

Questions

How many armor trims are there?

As of Minecraft 26.2 there are 18 trim patterns (smithing templates) and 11 trim materials, resin having joined with the Pale Garden, giving 198 unique trim looks per armor piece. Copper armor can be trimmed now too.

Where do I find smithing templates?

Each pattern comes from a specific structure. Coast from shipwrecks, Ward and Silence from ancient cities, Rib from nether fortresses, Flow and Bolt from trial chambers, and more. This viewer lists the source for every pattern.

Do trims change armor protection?

No. Armor trims are purely cosmetic. They change how your armor looks but never its defense, durability or enchantments.
